Welcome to Grade Two

Welcome to the grade two classroom where learning is adventurous and having fun is a must. Grade two is a big step from grade one. Students receive their own desks and where “homework” (Spelling Lists and Memory Work every week) begins. School work investigates different areas of God’s perfectly designed and created world.

Math: We use Math Their Way and learn addition and subtraction, geometry, measurement, multiplication, sorting, and division.

Bible: We study the Bible using God’s Promise  from CSI with an emphasis on the New Testament. Our units include topics such as Jesus' Early Ministry, Who Is Jesus?, The Parables, and The Lord’s Prayer.

Language Arts: We use the four-Block literacy model as a tool for learning to read, write, listen, and speak.

For Guided Reading, we use Collections series by Prentice Hall Ginn and read  such books as People and Places, Keep in Touch, and Amazing Animals.

For Creative Writing, we use CSI Writing Rainbow which includes concepts like capitalize and punctuate, nouns and verbs, poetry, and stories.

For Printing we review all upper and lower case letters. Halfway through the school year, cursive writing is begun and we introduce all letters again.

For Working with Words, we use the Month by Month Phonics curriculum which includes: vowels and ending sounds; using rhymes to spell and write; blends, long vowels sounds; ending of “e”, “i”, “y”; clusters, plurals, and word blends.

For Spelling, we use Modern Curriculum Press and that with words from classroom units.

Social Studies/Science/Health: We teach units published by OACS. These units include Consider the Lilies, All Creatures Great and Small, The Earth Declares, God Shows Us How to Move, and Mapping My Neighbourhood

French: We use Dimoitou 1, Volumes 1 and 2 from Centre Educatif et Culturel Inc., which includes: Greetings, age, colour, 1-10, Canadian Flag, school, family, Thanksgiving, Remembrance Day, shapes, toys, Christmas decorations, activities, winter sports, carnival, Valentine’s Day, Transportation, Spring, Easter, Flowers, Mother’s Day, and Father’s Day.

Art: We concentrate on introducing the students to a variety of media and techniques as we learn to express ourselves to self, others and to God. Art Ideas (OACS) is available as a resource as is Art Connections 2.

Physical Education: We teach motor proficiency, manipulative skills, motor abilities, integrative skills, and creative movement. Resources include Physical Education K-2 and Physical Education for Children by Thomas, Lee&Thomas.

Music: We use Musicplay by Denise Gagne (1997) to teach concepts such as beat, rhythm, tone-matching, intervals melody, harmony, instrument technique, creating patterns, forms, expression, and listening.

Some of our field trips include such places as Maple Syrup Farm, Laidlaw Transit, Mall, Pizza place, Daily Bread Food Bank, and African Lion Safari.

Come and experience the wonderful world of grade two with loving teachers who equip and nourish students in the teachings of Christ.
