Welcome to Grade Three
In Grade 3, we study the Bible using CSI - Calling God’s Tribe with an emphasis on the first half of the Old Tribe. We study the stories of Creation to the
In Language Arts, we use the Four-Block Model as a tool to teach reading, writing, listening, and speaking. For Guided Reading, we use the CSI World of Literature 3 anthology. We also use Collections: Beneath the Surface, which focuses on reading for information. Our novel studies are: The Best Christmas Pageant Ever by Barbara Robinson and Different Dragons by Jean Little. For Creative Writing, we use CSI - Writing Rainbow. We study proper use of paragraphs, editing, sentence structure, letter writing, poetry, different kinds of words (verbs, adjectives, nouns, etc.), and how to implement different kinds of characters in our stories. In Penmanship, we use the Canadian Handwriting Book C. This focuses on how to produce proper printing and cursive writing. By the end of Grade 3, we are producing work using cursive writing. We begin TypeRights after we have completed the penmanship book for proper fingering and efficiency. For Working With Words, we use Carson Dellosa - Month by Month Phonics. We also use Language Power Book A for Grammar. For Spelling, we work with words from Spelling Workout Book C, Word Wall Words, and words from classroom units. Student have their own dictionaries for words they need. To increase reading in the classroom, we participate in the Accelerated Reading Program, in which the students read books and take quizzes to earn points. They visit the library weekly. In class, we have daily silent reading time. In Math, we use Pearson’s Math Everywhere supplemented with Houghton Mifflin Mathematics 3. We study basic addition and subtraction facts to 18, 2-digit subtraction and addtions, ordinal numbers, geometry, fractions, graphs, volume, money, temperature, time, multiplication (0-12), and division. In Social Studies/Science/Health, we study the units produced by OACS. The titles include: God Made us to be Engineers, The Trees of the Field, All Creatures Large and Small 3, Mapping the World, God Speaks Through Magnetism, The Heavens Declare, Our Historical Community, God Keep our Land - Canadian Citizenship, and Countries around the World. In Health, we focus on the food pyramid and how to eat healthy and we study a unit called “You and Your Feelings.” In this unit, we become aware of our feelings and learn how to express those feelings that are created. We learn how to deal with different situations and how to solve conflict. In French, we use Dimotiou 2 from Centre Educatif et Culturel Inc.which includes: Classroom objects, days of the week, numbers to 31, months of the year, articles of clothing, rooms in a school, foods, meals, time, family members, Christmas decorations and gifts, weather, animals of the far north, musical instruments, transportation, occupations, the neighbourhood, and zoo animals. In Art, we concentrated on media and techniques as we learn to express ourselves to God and others. We focus on drawing, painting, mixed media, construction, weaving, printing, sculpture, and wood. In Physical Education, we play different games and sports, do relays, produce creative movements to music, learn about spatial awareness, and we work on building strength, flexibility, and coordination. In Music, we use Musicplay as the main curriculum. We study concepts such as beat, rhythm, pitch (melody, harmony), form, and tempo and dynamics. We try to integrate computer skills throughout the curriculum. We research planets using the internet. We learn how to copy and paste, drag an object, and make an object smaller or bigger to create our own title pages for our units. We also learn how to make slide shows. Some of the field trips that we do are: Georgetown Fall Fair, the
